Born in St Petersburg, Nadezhda Gaidukova is an Israeli-Russian contralto whose artistic profile combines a distinctive dark vocal timbre with strong theatrical versatility and a particular affinity for en travesti, Baroque and Classical repertoire.

 

Her musical education began at an early age in St Petersburg. For more than a decade she performed as a chorister and soloist with the Dunaevsky Ensemble of Music and Dance, appearing with orchestra, three choirs and dance ensemble. During her childhood she also gained her first experience of professional music theatre through performances in Kálmán’s Gräfin Mariza at the St Petersburg Theatre of Musical Comedy.

 

Gaidukova subsequently pursued vocal and operatic studies in St Petersburg, including training at the Rimsky-Korsakov College and Conservatory environment and at Herzen State University, where she completed her Bachelor’s studies under Elena Morozova. She later joined the Young Artist Programme directed by Natalia Latisheva, coach of the Mariinsky Theatre’s Atkins Program.

 

Following the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war, Gaidukova left Russia and relocated to Israel in 2022. There she continued her professional and academic development at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, completing advanced studies in Opera Performance with Larisa Tetuev and David Sebba. In 2023–2024 she was a member of Meitar, the Young Artist Studio of the Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv.

 

Her stage repertoire reflects a particular strength in trouser roles and dramatic character parts. Recent engagements include Tolomeo in Handel’s Giulio Cesare in Egitto, Le Prince Charmant in Massenet’s Cendrillon, Arnalta in Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea, Annio in Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito, Bradamante in Handel’s Alcina, Orlofsky in Strauss’s Die Fledermaus, and Saul in Purcell's sacred music-drama Saul and the Witch of Endor. Her work has brought her into collaboration with institutions and ensembles including the Israeli Opera, Jerusalem Opera, Jerusalem Baroque Orchestra, Jerusalem Lyric Opera Festival, OperUs and the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance.

 

Equally active on the concert platform, Gaidukova has performed repertoire ranging from Bach, Handel, Vivaldi and Pergolesi to Schubert, Brahms, Mahler, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov. Her concert appearances have taken her to venues and cultural institutions in Israel, Italy, Serbia and the United Kingdom, including Steinway Hall in London, the National Stadium in Niš, the Teatro Comunale in Montecarrotto, the YMCA in Jerusalem and HaTarbut Hall in Tel Aviv.

 

Her broader repertoire encompasses roles including Adalgisa, Fenena, La Cieca, Polina, Carmen, Dalila, Olga, Nicklausse, Hélène, Polinesso, Orfeo, Zanaida and Tolomeo, alongside extensive experience in oratorio, ensemble repertoire, Lied and Russian romance.

 

Described by The Jerusalem Post as an interpreter able to bring emotional depth to the classic en travesti repertoire, Gaidukova is developing an increasingly international career distinguished by dramatic intelligence, stylistic curiosity and a vocal identity particularly suited to the contralto and low mezzo-soprano repertoire.
